Invited by International Economic History Association, Prof. Ma Min, Party Committee Secretary of CCNU, attended
the IEHA Executive Committee Meeting held in Massachusetts Institute of Technology from Nov. 3rdto Nov. 7th. As
the only Chinese Executive member in IEHA, Prof. Ma, together with other foreign Executive members, discussed
the first round of issues submitted by the 2018 World Economic History Congress. He also visited the Institute
for Quantitative Social Science, Harvard University, Harvard-Yenching Institute. In University of Massachusetts
Boston, he held talks with the heads of schools about teacher-student exchange project in China.
The International Economic History Association Executive Committee Meeting was held in the Department of History
of Massachusetts Institute of Technology from Nov. 3rdto Nov. 5th.Hosted by the Association’s president Prof.
Okazaki Tetsuji, from the University of Tokyo, Japan, the Society Secretary General Jari Eloranta and Marjolein
t’Hart made reports on overall performance and financial situation of the Institute respectively; Prof. Ann
McCants, from Department of History of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, made a report on conference
preparations on behalf of the 2018 Organizing Committee. Members of the Executive Committee had also considered
the audit report of the Executive Committee, and discussed the applications for 2021 World Economic History
Congress, hosting arrangements in the future and other issues. It was decided that the International Economic
History Association Executive Committee Meeting to be held in Boston in late October 2017.
On Nov.7th, Prof. Ma was invited to visit the famous Harvard University social science quantitative research and
big data center — Institute for Quantitative Social Science, IQSS. The Dataverse soft platform of this
Institute now has 20 Installations, which include Peking University, Fudan University and other main national
key universities. Sonia Barbosa, director of the Institute, made a detailed introduction about the Institute,
the status quo ofbig data construction and development goals. Prof. Ma introduced the progress made by CCNU in
educational information and future planning on big data center construction in colleges and universities in
China, and expressed his hope of establishing joint distinctive big data centers with Harvard University.
Director Sonia expressed their sincere wish of establishing cooperation and communication relationship with CCNU
and developing and constructing the big database in educational information together. Both sides agreed that the
two universities would further implement outcome of the talks and reach substantial cooperation by video calls ,
visit, etc.
During the visit at Harvard University, Prof. Ma also visited Harvard-Yenching Institute, had talks with the
President Prof. Elizabeth Perry and Vice president Prof. Li Ruohong and presented them with a set of General
History of modern Chinese chamber of commerce. Prof. Ma gave a detailed introduction of the development of CCNU
’s History subject in recent years and introduced academic achievements of Harvard-Yenching Institute by
combining CCNU’s research focus. Prof. Elizabeth Perry expressed a desire to develop close and extensive
cooperation with CCNU in comparison research between China and India, Chinese Church History Studies and other
academic fields by Visiting Scholars Programmes, PHD Programmes, international conferences, etc.
